THe Ship Inn, formerly The Anwoth, where Five Red Herrings was writtenThis is a 7 day cycling tour following a route to 'real places' mentioned in the Five Red Herrings novel written and set in Galloway. The towns of Kirkcudbright and Gatehouse of Fleet are heavily featured with several significant countryside locations which you can visit by bicycle.
Lord Peter Wimsey is the sleuth, who was played by Ian Carmichael when the book was serialised on TV in 1976. The plot involves the artists colony in Kirkcudbright - which is still the case today as it is themed as an artists town with several art galleries.
In Gatehouse of Fleet, a National Scenic Area, the author Dorothy L. Sayers used to stay the summer months in the Anwoth Hotel, only recently re-named the Ship Inn, where she wrote much of the book. This is now an excellent quality hotel and would be an ideal location to stay during the tour.
So, as well as getting an interesting tour of Galloway by bicycle, you can follow this theme to provide an extra interest. Contact us to obtain more information on this tour.
Kirkcudbright where the Wickerman was filmedThe early 1972 cult movie The Wickerman was mostly filmed in Dumfries and Galloway region.
Many of the film locations are still there, some looking like they were in 1972, as remarked by the star Edward Woodward where he re-vistited the Ellangowan Hotel in Creetown, the bar of The Green Man, many years later.
This gentle cycling tour allows you refresh your memory by watching the film again at your accommodation, then take a cycle tour through scenic countryside on quiet country roads with many other interesting features along the way.
The tour can be guided or self guided, last for a minimum of 3 days, and can even co-incide with the annual Wickerman Festival held each year near to our base in Castle Douglas - 20th and 21st July 2012.
Before the Festival we are offering a guided tour, with arrival on Monday 16th July, cycling on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, ready for you to attend the Festival thereafter.
Similarly, we will run a tour after the event, with B&B accommodation supplied from the Sunday night and the tour starting on the Monday.
Please contact us if you are interested in this cycling tour.
