Both Castle Douglas and Kirkcudbright are good cycling areas and ideal for a combined scenery and food and drink tour.
Day 1 - Castle Douglas 'food town'
The cycle route is around the town and through several villages and hamlets on quiet country roads. The day, which will be easy going, will also visit Threave Garden and Threave Castle with nearby osprey nest viewpoint. In the market town, known for it's butchers, we visit a coffee shop with over 25 ground-to-order coffees and 14 teas to choose from combined with a selection of hand-made award winning chocolates. An artisan bakery and Toffee shop with their own ice cream are another two shop visits. The day ends with a short tour of Sulwath brewery with a tasting after the end of the day's cycling. A local Scottish / Italian restaurant can provide an evening meal, including a scallops dish the chef made for a visit by the Queen. You stay at our Summerhill B&B tonight, subject to availability.
Day 2 - A Kirkcudbright Circuit
In order to obtain a wee bit more exercise to counter your food and drink sampling, today we cycle 10 miles to Kirkcudbright famed as the artists’ town on our circular route. For those who would prefer not to cycle back to Castle Douglas, a transport option will be available.
After a tour round this artists' town, we will have lunch in a Kirkcudbright which will include local produce including scallops from the harbour fishing boats and also Castle Maclellan pate which is produced in the town. A further tour of the town brings the option to sample other local food products such as local chocolates and ice cream from nearby Cream o' Galloway. A local restaurant can provide a 'best of Galloway' evening meal.
This tour can be extended with an extra night in Kirkcudbright and also one in Gatehouse of Fleet with visits to Galloway Lodge Preserves, Cream o’ Galloway ice cream farm and other attractions.
